Shore lines by Border Readers

7pm in Old Library, Auckland Palace, Friday 13th March 2026

The Border Readers present 'Shore Lines'

The Border Readers are regionally based professional actors who give intimate live readings of short stories on literary themes in community arts venues. In Shore Lines Stephen Tomlin and Janine Birkett narrate four very different contemporary stories set on the coast, from Northumberland to Devon.

Touch and Go. Anchored in Amble, will Jenny ever set sail? Jo Scott – herself an experienced yachtswoman – entertains with a romantic witty tale of self-discovery.

A successful middle aged businesswoman is compelled by the smell of intertidal mud to recall her pivotal role in a deadly adolescent affair...Mud is yet another great example of Ann Cleeves mastery of the crime story genre.

Tony Glover’s The Weather Gleam illuminates Jonty and Violet’s rocky relationship during a weekend stay on Holy Island as witnessed by Charlie, Vi’s devoted Bedlington terrier.

Crossing the Bar is an evocative and moving story from novelist and travel writer Linda Cracknell, inspired by Tennyson’s classic poem of the same name. It was originally commissioned and broadcast by BBC Radio 4 in 2018.
